Floating has been around for over 40 years , its even been on The Simpsons. While we won’t put a cinder block on top of your float tank, you can experience turning into a cat…..kind of

While full hallucination is rare, it is not uncommon for floaters to experience swirling colors and shapes.

Lisa’s float shows the Theta state is full effect.

As Lisa nods off between getting shewed away with a broom as a cat or , indulging in a 5 pork meat sandwich as her father , she is demonstrating the dreamlike state associated with theta brain waves.

Mental images appear unexpected, unpredictable, dreamlike but very vivid  (known as the hypnagogic images ).

Although mysterious and elusive, it has the potential to produce a highly productive and enlightening state. The problem is that most people fall asleep as soon as they begin experiencing large amounts of theta. Until now!!

Many first time floaters feel they will just fall asleep in this relaxing environment. That is true for some people and it is the best sleep they have had in a long time I am sure. However most “float” between the barrier of awake and asleep , entering one memory for a while, coming back and entering another.

Lastly, the episode like most Simpsons stories holds a lesson. As Lisa changes from one person to another she gains a new perspective not available to her before. Floating allows you to evaluate different points of view, explore ideas further and gain something useful in your day to day life. Sensory deprivation is about taking away the outside but it’s really about what you gain on the inside.
